Certificate in Further Education Teaching

Purpose of the scheme

The purpose of the scheme is to provide a through preparation for Further Education Teaching. Already established nationally as the foremost qualification for teachers in post-compulsory education and training, it is intended as a qualification which will equip a wide range of teachers to support learners.

The certificate is designed for full time and part time teachers who are practising or wanting to start out in Post-16 education and training. Course objective

Specifically, the scheme is designed to enable candidates to:

- adopt an integrative approach to the theory and practice of teaching and training
- build up knowledge of principles of learning, teaching and assessment and evaluation
- analyse their students abilities, potential and learning needs
- apply a range of methods and techniques of teaching, learning, assessment and evaluation, exploring such innovative approaches as may be appropriate
- design organise and evaluate teaching and learning programmes
- adopt an innovative approach to collecting and using a wide range of teaching and learning resources, including developing their own skills in the use of Information Technology
- reflect on their own experience, practice skills and potential for development
- develop their own communication and inter-personal skills
- develop an awareness of their professional role, the essential value systems which underpin it and legal requirements for carrying out the role

Method of Assessment

The course is assignment based around the units taught. Students will be allocated in work placement which will be supervised by the course tutor. All students will get paid by the institution where they will be delivering their teaching during the work placement.

This is a two stage programme comprising of the following modules;

Stage One
Unit 1 - Assess learner?s needs
Unit2 - session plan and teaching
Unit 3 - Teaching and learning activities
Unit 4 - Select resources
Unit 5 - Learner support
Unit 6 - Assessment activity
Unit 7 - Self evaluation
Unit8 - observe a teacher

Stage Two
Unit 1 - Identify and assess learners needs
Unit 2 - Plan and manage the learning process
Unit 3 - Use techniques and facilities learning
Unit 4 - Principles of learning
Unit 5 - Communication seminar paper
Unit 6 - Develop resources
Unit 7 - Support and guidance
Unit 8 - Assessment
Unit 9 - Educational issues
Unit 10 - Personal development

Stage Three

PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate in Education)

Course Duration

Stage One and Two and Three - Two years

Entry Requirements

- You must be aged 21 or above to register.

- It is important that candidates hold a good command of written and spoken English.

- Students should hold at least 2 GCE A-level or equivalent. We would recommend that potential candidates hold a professional qualification in the area in which they wish to teach at least one higher level than those they will teach.

Progression route
Once students have completed the Certificate in Further Education Teaching they can complete final year 'top up' in BEd (Bachelors of Arts in Education).

Job Opportunities Guaranteed teaching posts in various teaching environments during and after completion of studies.
